Year 5

Welcome to Year 5

Hello and welcome back to all parents and pupils of Year 5. I hope you’ve all had a fantastic holiday and that the children are raring to go for another exciting year at Carr Head.

This newsletter will give you a little more detail about day to day routines and the curriculum in Year 5.

Mrs Hutchinson and Mrs Lupton will be providing teaching support in Year 5 and will be working with children of all abilities to maintain the high standards that are expected of upper juniors. On Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays until Christmas we have Mr Downe (a trainee teacher) joining us.

Day to day:

The children can bring a named water bottle in each day. These are kept just outside the classroom. The children can take them out with them at break times. Your child may bring in a healthy snack for morning break-time.

P.E. will be on a Monday and on a Friday afternoon we are going swimming starting Friday 21st September. Please ensure your child’s PE kit is kept in school in a named Carr Head PE bag. The ‘Run a Mile’ challenge will happen throughout the week and your child will need appropriate black or white trainers in school each day.

Your child will need to have their reading book in school every day. We will change these when we feel they are able to read it fluently and show a good level of understanding. Guided Reading will be taking place daily.

Our topic this half term is ‘A Kingdom United.’ Through this topic we will be writing persuasion texts to visit Poulton, writing stories about the legends of the British Isles and learning about the history of our local area. In maths, we will be working on improving our understanding of place value and building on our knowledge of decimals, angles and perimeter. In science, we will be looking at the properties of materials. Please visit the school website for more information on the Year 5 curriculum.

This year your child will have a times tables booklet and spelling booklet which must be brought in to school every Friday. Weekly homework will usually consist of mental maths questions or maths learnt in the week alongside grammar tasks or comprehension questions. Homework is to be in for Friday and will given out on Friday. Spelling tests will take place in school on Friday.

Best wishes

 Mrs Haines
