High Frequency Words

100 high-frequency words in phases from Letters and Sounds

We teach decodable words by saying sounds in a word in the order in which they occur.

Words that are not phonetically decodable are taught by encouraging the children to identify the parts of a word which are phonetically regular (i.e. can be sounded out) and identify the parts of the word which are ‘tricky’. Using strategies such as flashcards may also be useful to support learning of ‘tricky’ words once they have been explored phonetically.

Below are the 100 high frequency words in phases. Phonetically decodable words are in green, to visually represent to the children they need to apply their phonic knowledge and skills, whereas the high frequency ‘tricky words’ are in red.
