Early Years Foundation Stage

The Foundation Stage is a distinct key stage with its own curriculum and gives the children a secure ‘foundation’ for later learning:

The prime areas of learning:
• communication and language
• physical development
• personal, social and emotional development

The specific areas of learning:
• literacy
• mathematics
• understanding the world
• expressive arts and design

Children are also supported in the development of:

The learning characteristics:
• playing and exploring
• active learning
• creating and thinking critically

Phonics is taught daily and children are encouraged to explore the outdoors as an integral aspect of the curriculum. Since the cohort is split across 2 classes (Oak and Rowan) there are daily opportunities for friendships to be formed across both classes.
