Maths

Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.                                                                                                                                            Maths National Curriculum 2013 (DfE)

At Carr Head Primary School, we aim to empower our children with an ‘I can do it’ attitude towards maths, embracing our work on growth mindset. We encourage children to develop their knowledge and understanding of mathematics and aim for all children to enjoy and achieve in maths and become confident mathematicians.

The National Curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils have conceptual understanding and are able to recall and apply their knowledge rapidly and accurately to problems
  • can reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

The children at Carr Head will be:

  • taught well and be given the opportunity to learn in ways that maximise the chances of success.
  • set appropriate learning challenges.
Times Tables Rock Stars
We have adopted the ‘Times Tables Rock Star’ platform as a way for the children to develop and secure their knowledge and recall of times tables.  Times tables are the essential building blocks that underpin every maths curriculum, yet children always find them a challenge.  Times Tables Rock Stars is an award-winning maths learning platform that helps pupils practise and recall their times tables like a rock star, using paper worksheets, and playing online adaptive question-based games via the app and browser. This is a whole school initiative to make learning maths more fun, and also to improve maths outcomes for our children. Some children have trialled the approach already and it is making a real difference to their recall of times tables and their ability to apply their knowledge to other contexts.
Practice really does make perfect when it comes to learning times tables, so we would welcome your could support in encouraging your child to access the platform 2-3 times a week.  It will make their maths learning in class easier because knowing times tables can help many other and wider areas of maths.  Your child will have been given log in details by their class teacher so that they can access the platform at home as well as in school.
